Qaher-313 : Video

Iran today unveiled the domestically built Qaher-313 jet fighter. The state TV showed a video of the new aircraft in flight. (IRINN, 2 February)

Note: Commentators have observed that the Qaher-313 has its fixed landing gear down while traveling at high G. Also interesting to note that Iran which has not yet produced turbo jet engine, is unveiling a turbo fan engine on this aircraft.

Forgive my ignorance, I take it that by landing gear you mean the landing wheels?! I may be wrong but I could not see the landing gear down in the video while travelling at high G, unless someone has seen the high resolution version of the video. As regards the engine, they could have acquired the Turbo engine from Russia. This is not a big deal, Boeing gets its engines fro UK Rolls-Royse.

reader,

Iranian president and defense minister both announced that all components of Qaher-313 have been built inside Iran. Actually that was the highlight of their announcements. On landing gear, two different commentators have observed that, but I will look into it and will post an answer when I have it.

It was nothing wrong for Iran to announce that it was unveiling a mock-up of a plane it intends to build in future. Nobody would have objected. But the government has a tendency to exaggerate, believing people are dumb and could not see the difference between an RC model, and a bad one for that - please see the close-up photos in my previous post, and a modern operational jet fighter.

Regardless of what people say, that's one cool looking fighter jet!

LOL!! This is as real as their mock-up of their cardboard Imam!

The video could be of a radio-controlled scale model. Please look at close-up photos (by clicking on the link provided in the body of this post) and notice the following problems pointed out by numerous commentators today:

- The body is way too small.
- No space for an internal weapon bay required for a stealth fighter jet.
- The plexiglass canopy.
- Incomplete cockpit, and lack of wiring behind the front panel.
- No noozle in the engine section.
- Extremely small air intakes.
- Look at the pilot sitting in the cockpit; way too small to accommodate a pilot if it were a real plane.
- The flight paths in the video, looking more like a radio-controlled scale model.

This is not to say at all that the Iranian defense industry should not build a mock-up. But they should have clearly said so and introduced the model as a mock-up with intentions to build the plane in future, after all the credibility of Iranian president and defense minister is on the line here, they were introducing the new plane to the country and the world. A PR disaster!

Who though the Iranian do not have a great sense of humor. Although if it was up to me, I would have advised them to wait until until April 1st

I am not convinced - time will tell. If you freeze the video on the very first few frames of the flight you will see a believable scale of people on the ground relative to the cloud and the aircraft. I am not an expert but I find it difficult to believe that the video was of a radio-controlled scale model.

More PR intended for the domestic audience. Iran isn't the only country that engages in such aviation studies. Their military industrial complex, such as it is, benefits from such an R&D exercise, as well.

But no serious observer should be led to believe that Iran will any time soon field a fleet of indigenously produced "stealth fighters."

Much more interesting is their ballistic missile strike force, which are continually developing.

I agree, unfortunately Iran is always (most of the time at least) do a very bad sort of communication. Sometimes it is unintentional and is a result of negligence and professional reporting (like the monkey case which turns out the media messed two different image together) and sometimes it is unnecessary exaggeration. For this case it seems all they have is a mockup and an RC model and the actual prototype is not yet ready. These sort of announcements wash all credibility associated to Iranian Government and military while by being a little more humble and realistic they will look much more professional and serious (look at India for example which has similar programs with perhaps more advanced status but much less buzz)
Iran has a lot of potential and real achievements, however, these sort of shows will damage our self image which is the most important things for a nation

From my own point of observation, the video footage of the fighter jet looks real and so is the speed and sound of the jet roaring in the air. I have come to know that this latest one is the IRAN's third generation.

Herewith a quote from the Flightglobal, a respectable aviation website on the possible nature of the engine:
"Given the apparent small size of the aircraft and its single engine design, the Qaher 313 could be powered by reverse engineered variants of the General Electric J-85 turbojet that Iran is known to have in its possession."

They have admitted that the model in that video footage is an RC-model:

Watch what he says on 4:45.

Could be. That thing lacks more than only a engine. The whole project is a joke. Even the Russians are laughing at us.

I quite agree with your analysis, from allochtonie 4:47 PM post we now know that both the president and defense minister were economical with truth, but interestingly the engineer in the clip was honest in admitting that the flight was indeed that of an RC model (namonee kochek).

you are such smart guy and analyzed every thing from a small picture,"wow","what brain you are".you are jus a blessing to the world . i ask president and defense minister to send you a blue print of the jet so you can share it with your friends.

Nader Uskowi said...

The president and the defense minister need not send anyone the blueprints, just stop exaggerating and telling just the truth, which was very powerful: We have built the mock-up and intend to build the actual fighter jet in future.

Nader Uskowi said...

Would you elaborate why I am "anti-Persian" and biased? I believe your anger should be directed to Iranian officials who have created a PR disaster by their nonchalant comments about building a new jet fighter. they could have simply told the world that the country's scientists have made the mock-up model and the country will produced the jets in future. Wouldn't that have been a more powerful statement? And what is "anti-Persian" about this analysis? And who is "Persian Nation?"

Anonymous said...

The Iranian military should indeed really work its PR (I'm wondering how much could be caused by the language difference, i mean the engineer seems to state it is an RC we see flying)... Admitting a few shortcomings would add alot of credibility where it matters. This jet still seems quite promising... it looks like quite a step up from the saeqeh.

from mat's point of view, the toy aircraft was bigger than an airliner, traveling at the speed of light, and built out of Kryptonite

you figure that out all by yourself??? wow you are awsome,i think is hard for you to see the facts and the truth any more, you have bunker down mentality and you are very happy with it,it is hard for you to change.it is okay to be wrong.but please don't misguide others just because is hard for you to change. believe in your country progress.it is okay to change your political view too, it wont hurt you actually it will liberate you,but the question is."are you ready".

Nader Uskowi said...

Why do you need to change the subject? the subject is the misrepresentation and exaggeration by the two most senior officials of Iran on Qaher-313. This is an old tactic, you need to come up with more creative comments in this blog. Believing in a country's progress and accepting false claims are two different things. If you have an opinion or analysis on why the Iranian officials behaved so amateurishly, I would love to hear.

This reminds me of something that happened some years ago:
Before 1376 when I was a student at Mashhad, I remember, a guy makes a lot of buzz for a while. Briefly this guy claimed to be a genius and become a brain surgeon at age 19 or so. The funny (and sad) thing was the fact that the officials take him seriously without investigation. The guy gave some interviews in the TV (khorasan TV) and even met with local authorities, among them Ayatollh vaeze Tabsi, who gave him some gifts etc and all that shown in the TV. After that he was actually going to meet Khamenee but befor this happens the alumni student of Ferdowsi university association (or maybe NODET I am not sure) did an investigation and actually interviewed the guy and not surprisingly it turns out he is a fake and even a person with psychological and mental problems.
My conclusion is (even if Ahmadinejad really believed of what he said) : This sort of things seems to be usual in our country specially when the "official" and their associates are not among the academia and intellectuals who can uncover the truth rapidly (Ahmadinejad is not really an academic person; it is well known that he got his PhD with Salavat ;)
In IR there two types of officials: 1-People without any understanding of science (majority like most Akhonds and most people working with Ahmadinejad, Sepah and Artesh officers ....) 2-Intelligent and educated (minority: like Aref, Salehi, Mohmadjavad Larijani,...) The second group can understand these sort of fakes and also the damage that they cause but they are pure minority

This mock-up like the previous mock-up (Shafagh) will never see the light of day. This regime hasn't even managed to build a third generation fighter let alone 5th generation one.
If they manage to build this fighter which is highly unlikely,it will be another twenty years and billions of dollars before it could take into the air.
These insane people ruling Iran must be on some heavy drugs if they think they can peddle their models and claim them as real. They need to be evicted and replaced with a sane system of government.

iran bashing as usual, president ahmadinajad is an academician,he has doctorate in civil engineering, from tehran university.he ranked #3 in university admission(conquer) in entire country.stop nonsense please.if you don't have some thing positive and facts rights, choose silence.thank you.i hope this site post my comments.

This is not a mockup nor is it a finished version. HUD is not in place which means it is not a final version but for trials it does not need it. This is why the front section is unfinished looking (standard for trial version including current version of f35). It has a single engine. The only engine in numbers that Iran has that fits is Rd33 (j84 would have been double engine as single engine is too small. A bigger plane will appear if a bigger engine is available or designed locally. Finally years ago shafagh was available. If they did not see an advantage they would just recycled it as they have done. We know there is a finished copy available?

CALCULATED MIX UP TO DRAW WORLD ATTENTION!

How sad it is that many people here come wth notion that Iran can't packege itself properly and cast doubt on its adances as empty PR!.SOME people ave pinted a pistol on the regmes hea e! demanding some hard evidences on the monkey issue or else they dssms the whole project as a fraud!!.unknown to this people IRAN cant afford to take the world for a ride-but he saga surronds on the sanctions!.

FACT ONE-The suppose of sanctions is to isolate the regime and if possible give it a partial global news blackout.because the west seems 'not to notice IRAN until it does nothing or does something wrong!!',IT IS LOGICAL FOR THEM to stage manage the 'mess' and score a free penalty by creating interest and receive the glare which the architects of the sanctions are fighting hard to deny the NATION!.

FACT TWO-Iran is not Qatar which means that we are dealing with a leaned and very intelligent people! HAD IRAN WISHED TO FOOL THE WORLD TEN HOW EASY -just stage manage the episode and no one would have noticed anything!.

B.M.A.,

“CALCULATED MIX UP TO DRAW WORLD ATTENTION!” It is interesting that you are practically accusing the country’s president and its defense minister of compliance in creating “calculated mix up!” They are the ones who created this “mix up” by their calculating exaggerations, and in the process creating a PR disaster. Before pointing fingers to others, and deflecting blame from government officials, isn’t it more honest to say that the leadership needs to be careful in their announcements, not taking people for granted and thinking they are stupid? They also need to employ more effective PR strategies; this is a gang who seemingly can’t shoot strait.
