Iran, IAEA Reach Agreement on Nuclear Probe - Xinhua

Iran has agreed that the IAEA conducts investigation into possible nuclear weapon-related research at the country’s Parchin military base near Tehran, Xinhua News Agency reported. The agreement was reportedly reached on 14 December in Tehran where the Iranian and the IAEA officials held the latest of a series of meetings aimed at establishing ground rules for the investigation of any military aspects of Iran's nuclear program. IAEA already inspected Parchin in 2005, they found nothing.

Then it shouldn’t be a big deal if they visit again, especially when a final agreement with IAEA so much depends on the outcome of such visit.

Well it is a big deal Mr.Uskowi, no other country has ever opened up their military sites to the IAEA, but everyone expects Iran to do so because they are not part of the status quo. Iran has always been treated different, Saddam invaded Iran the UN did not condemn, Saddam used chemical weapons on Iran the UN did not condemn, the US knowingly shot down a Iranian airliner the UN did not condemn.

Let’s discuss the issue at hand, if you will. Although Parchin is a military base, but that’s not the reason the IAEA wants to visit. There are so many other military bases in Iran, some much larger than Parchin, but the IAEA has not requested to visit them. The issue here is the presence of documents given to IAEA by foreign intelligence agencies indicating that Iran was conducting a research program at Parchin on production of triggers needed to operate a nuclear weapon. Now these reports might be false, but the IAEA says it needs to investigate the correctness/falseness of the documents, and that can only be done on site.

The non-proliferation agreement that Iran operates under does not exempt military bases from IAEA inspections if they are also used as nuclear sites. So the fact that Parchin is a military base does not immune it from inspection. And the Iranian government does not also say that Parchin cannot be visited because it is a military base. Iran has consistently said that it has never conducted nuclear weapon research at Parchin, hence denying the IAEA requests for the visit. But it appears that they have now agreed to let IAEA inspectors inside the facilities.

Earlier another commentator had said that IAEA has visited Parchin in 2005. What we don’t know is which part of the base, which building(s), were inspected then, and if the IAEA has information that prompted it to visit other parts, or if their information indicate that the suspected research activities began after that earlier visit.

Mr.Uskowi I hope you are not referring to the same "foreign intelligence" that provided a fake graph and a fake 3D model of a "high explosive testing cabin" to the AP. Just google the name "George Jahn" + Parchin and you will see who you are dealing with.

Funny how the western media never mentions the 2005 inspections.

IAEA has not disclosed the names of the agencies providing the report, and naturally I can't say if these agencies were same as the one providing the "intelligence" and fake graph you are referring to. However, IAEA is taking the Parchin information seriously, and the best way to accept/refute it is by site visit. Please note this Parchin issue has been a major source of disagreement between Iran and the agency for couple of years now, sooner it is resolved the better.

the British inspected the area in 1942 and found no nuclear weapons activity !

therefore, because it didn't happen in the past, it never will happen.

MR USKOWI JUST WHO ARE THESE FOREIGN 'AGENTS'-to warrant a whole organization to throw away in the dustbin its own researched facts that IRAN is not 'deviating' but instead go for some 'intelligence' from goons!.

-IT IS A CALAMITY IN THIS WORLD WHEN A GLOBAL BODY IS SWAYED BY REPORTS FROM 'FOREIGN' AGENTS whose real identity are not known to the world but their findings are treated as gospel truth!!!.

There we go again! We are talking about Iran’s nuclear policy and the options facing it, and you want to divert the conversation to the organization setup of the IAEA, whether the UN agency can and should accept intelligence reports from member states? Do you agree with me that it’s best to leave this question to the students of non-proliferation, and here discuss Iran?

Time has come for Iran to announce its nuclear policy clearly and stop the cat and mouse game with the IAEA. If the Iranian government believes that it is in the country’s national interests to build the bomb, being in a region that others do possess nuclear weapons (Israel and Pakistan), and if it indeed is building the bomb, then it will need to exit NPT altogether and stop the cat and mouse game with the IAEA. If the government believes that building the bomb is not in its national interests at this time, then it should fully cooperate with the UN and IAEA and stop the cat and mouse game.

Keeping the status quo, defusing the issues and trying to manage the conversation on peripheral issues, like the nature and organization makeup of the UN or the IAEA, might seem to be smart tactical moves, but at the end of the day wil not resolve the issues facing the country. Decide on the basis of national security and move accordingly!

How dare the IAEA try to stop the IRI from building nuclear weapons,so that they bomb the "Zionists" with!
It's the duty of IRI to throw the Jews into the sea!
Let the IRI build their peaceful nuclear weapons and peacefully shower the "Zionists" with bombs!
