Vali Asr Mosque in Tehran, under construction

Contemporary design clearly evident at this late stage of construction of the Vali Asr mosque

Initial exterior and interior rendering of the completed mosque.
Current construction of exterior depicts minor changes to the design.

Above: for comparative purposes, the contemporary design of St. Mary's Cathedral in San Francisco

Such contemporary architectural designs for places of worship have their supporters and detractors. In the case of St. Mary's in San Francisco, I personally find the design attractive. It will be interesting to see how the new Vali Asr mosque is received in Tehran, once its completed.

It is indeed a different and more contemporary design and sets it apart from the Saudi Wahabbi mosques being built around the world to preach hate and jihad. Iran has been a progressive and moderating influence in the region.

The regime's weekly "Death to America" festivals are very "progressive and moderating".

I don’t want to get into negative stuff, but this building looks more like an ultra modern nuclear power station than a mosque. Perhaps I am old fashion, but I would have liked to see the exterior of this building covered with the spellbinding tilework mosaics that embodies the special character of Persian architecture. The interior looks modern and futuristic but rather cold and soulless for a place of worship. However on a positive note, it is good to see that our mullas are embracing modernity and change. Let’s hope they won’t cover the exterior of this building with long hanging chains of tacky multi colour light bulbs - with air conditioning units sticking out of the windows!

At least not eating the body parts of other Muslims like your alCIAda Takfiri buddies in Syria. Iran's hostility to the US is based on nationalism and the disgraceful history of US meddling in Iranian affairs and ripping-off its oil. Today, Iran is an independent, democratic, powerful and prosperous powerhouse and a force for stability and moderation in the region and the world. Russians, Chinese and Indian who have immense problems with Wahabbi fanned Takfiri terror in their own countries understand Iran's moderating influence and the enlightened Shia views. Iran is the most respected Islamic nation in the world by the sheer dint of its peaceful independent stance. When did you deluded self-loathers ever heard of an "Eyranian suicide bomber"? or a CIA sponsored cannibal. Iranians are balanced civilized people who have modified the mostly Arab bedouin creed of Islam into a uniquely Iranian perspective of Shiaism that suits our rich culture and history.

Fortunately, in the West you are free to engage in fantasizing as much as you like. I only wish I knew where you got all this free time to write these lengthy rambling posts that are a cure for insomnia? Do you do anything other than vomit up mullah propaganda from your residence in the Satanic West?

Other examples of the mollah regime's "progressive and moderating" influence are its forms of punishments (e.g. lashings with whips, limp amputations, and stonings), its reliance on a 7th century book and traditions as the foundations of its filthy, medieval "laws", its branding of people with backward Arab labels such as "Mofsed fel-Arz" and "Mohareb", its mass executions, its view of women's testimony as having the half the weight of a mans, etc. By the standards of West-residing IRI Groupies, these are examples of "progress" and "moderation". Yeah, right!

Take it as it is - not as what you want it to be.

Anon 7:32 PM....You claim Iran is a "prosperous power house"
What, with over seventy percent of the population below the poverty line?
And then your drivel about "enlightened shia views".
If by "enlightened" you mean rape, torture, murder by regime goons as well as drive by mobile crane hangings then you are advised to look up the real meaning of the word.

Iran is in bad need of another mosque!

TRUTH HURTS. The FACT is that Iran is now a global powerhouse and you anti-Iran losers are now aging and totally impotent ranters as Iranians have rejected your ilk since 1979. Iran is now a beacon to the free world as a transparent and inclusive democracy with over 80% participation and 90% plus support for the GREAT ISLAMIC REVOLUTION. As the adults had predicted the recent transparent election was benchmark in world democratic standards and peaceful transition of power. Just compare Iran to the US police state and the pathetic despotic Turkey and Arabs. Iran is a bright shining light.

We all believe you. Relax. You don't need to "zoor" so much. It's not healthy (though it is very funny for the rest of us to read).

99% of Iranians are Muslims and perhaps 80% are quite religious and devout so building mosques is about supply and demand. Iranians in recent years are more devout and praying in mass in mosques is now far more popular, particularly on Fridays, hence the regime's rock solid popular base. Shia Islam and Persian nationalism is the reason d'etre of Iranian state since 1500's.

Anon 8:37....Where the hell did you get the figure of 80% participation from? When the regime sources claimed the figure of 72.2%. Although that figure is very doubtful because it echoes the 72 of Hussain and his martyrs. The regime itself claimed that twenty million didn't participate in that "election". So where did you get the "90% plus support" figure from?
Please tell us because your diatribes are hilarious to say the least.

Really? You could've fooled me if I didn't know any better. The mosque attendance in Iran is the lowest in the Moslem world. In Turkey 25 million attend mosques compared to Iran's 5 million. The last thing Iran needs is another mosque.
