In the future Iran under a more pro-Iran regime should annex Azerbaijan.

The Akhoonds wouldn't in their wildest dreams put a claim on the tiny autonomous region of Nakhchivan, much less whole of Azerbaijan. If anything, the odds are more likely for the province of Azerbaijan (in the synthetically constructed country of Iran) to break away and re-attach with their brethren to the north. The actual ethnic boundary of Iran is comprised to the province of Fars, that's it. Every other region of Iran ought to be granted autonomy at the least - Kurdistan, Arabestan, Baluchistan, Azerbaijan, Turkmanestan.

I hate the Islamic regime and the Akhoonds. But Iran will never fall apart as you claim. The Baku republic of Azarbaijan is the one that is synthetically constructed by Russian invaders. If anything Iran has become smaller due to losing those central Asian countries because of Russian Persian wars.
Please go and read some history books and educate yourself before blurting your mouth like a typical Pan-Turkist.

If the Shah had not left, Iran would be easily powerful enough to do this by now, not that it would have.

The affiliation of Anonymous March 18, 2014 at 7:58 PM to the "brethren to north" is very evident. His lack of knowledge about Iran is pathetic: Iran was not "synthetically constructed ", not does Iran have any Arabestan ! What Anonymous March 18, 2014 at 5:29 PM meant, it seems to me, was that using the same absurd logic that Mr. Putin has used to annex a part of a country, Iran should claim back "north" Azerbaijan of for that matter many other cities to the "north". You may want to refer to your history 101 to learn how Bahrain was lost !

The ethnic boundary of Iran is greater than the state of Iran in its current form. Iran is the land of Iranians and not of the Persians.

Perhaps you would have made more sense were Iran still called Persia, and if you had actually highlighted this distinction.

It would depend first and foremost on whether a substantial majority would want to become a part of iran

in the future, perhaps Russia will annex Iran, just as the USSR tried to do under Stalin.... back then the US defended Iran from the Soviet designs, but now, as Iran is currently even more vile than Putin's Russia, perhaps no one will defend the theocracy.

Putin, in his speech, during that ceremony, has lashed at the West with the following words:

"....They (the West) have constantly tried to drive us into the corner for our independent stance, for defending it, for calling things by their proper names and not being hypocritical", Putin said,

"... But there are limits, and in the case of Ukraine, our Western partners have crossed a line.
They behaved rudely, irresponsibly and unprofessionally"..

The country of Azerbaijan is actually incomplete as it should encompass Southern Azerbaijan which lay in Iran. The Republic of Azerbaijan's population is actually very homogenous which can't be said of Iran's which is made up of numerous ethnicities making it a splintered society with deep divides. Infact you could make four countries out of Iran along with several autonomous regions. The truth is that Russia actually freed Azerbaijan from the Iranian stranglehold.
