Iran to Retaliate with Gas Sanctions – Khamenei

Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Thursday that Iran will retaliate against European sanctions by withholding on gas supplies to Europe.

“If sanctions are supposed to be the way, it is the Iranian nation which will sanction them in future,” Khamenei said. “Iran holds the world’s largest oil and gas reserves and when the time comes we will sanction them and the Islamic Republic is capable of doing that.” (Press TV, 19 February)

Khamenei was referring to continued sanctions against Iran if the nuclear talks with the six world powers fail. It was not clear how effective the threat of Iranian sanctions against the export of natural gas to Europe would be. Iran does not export gas to Europe.

“I believe if we allow them to dictate to us on the nuclear issue, they will still keep the sanctions in place because what they are against is the very foundation of our revolution,” Khamenei added.
