Israeli Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, the spiritual leader of the ultra-Orthodox Shas party in the Israeli Parliament and former Sephardi Chief Rabbi of Israel, has called for prayers for the destruction of “sheitan” (the evil) in Iran, presumably the senior leadership of the Islamic Republic.
"[When] we ask God to 'bring an end to our enemies', we should be thinking about Iran, those sheitan (evil) ones who threaten Israel. May the Lord destroy them," said Rabbi Yosef. (Reuters, 26 August)
The sermon by Rabbi Yosef added to a flurry of anti-Iran rhetoric from Israeli officials, raising concern that Israel might be planning to attack Iran.
Last week, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sent his national security adviser to brief the 91-year-old Rabbi on Iran's nuclear activities in a move seen to persuade the religious leader to support an attack on Iran.
