Iran Opposition Urges UN Secretary General to Visit Political Prisoners

The Guardian reported that Iran’s opposition has urged the UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to visit political prisoners and press the regime over its human rights record. Ban is to arrive in Tehran today to attend the summit of Non-Aligned Movement. Not far from the summit venue in north Tehran, a large number of Iranian activists are behind bars in Tehran's notorious Evin prison.
“I can assure you the secretary general fully intends to discuss human rights with the Iranian authorities, including at the highest level,” said Ban's spokesman, Martin Nesirky. (Gaurdian, 28 August)
