Containment for Iran Will Not Work - Netanyahu

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in an interview with NBC News' “Meet the Press” to be aired Sunday that a policy of containment for Iran will not work because Tehran is guided by a “leadership of fanaticism,” Associated Press reported. Netanyahu also said he disagreed with those who argue that going to war with Iran would be worse than a nuclear Iran.

“Iran is guided by a leadership with an unbelievable fanaticism,” Netanyahu said. “You want these fanatics to have nuclear weapons?” (AP, 15 September)

My guess is that what he means is that containment of Iran will not work to advance Netanyahu's personal political interests

I strongly disagree with Netanyahu. Containment for Iran can work since the primary motivation for Iran to obtain a nuclear weapon would be to avoid an invasion by the US and to thwart their efforts for regime change.

The regime just wants to stay in power and abuse the system by siphoning off the oil revenues into their own pockets at the expense of their people - not unlike politicians in other countries.

Superpowers have had over 60 years to dismantle their nuclear weapons. It has already been envisioned by the already signed NPT.

In today world's problems world powers require, for instance, that B. Assad has to stop offensives first, but at the same time they ostracize other countries instead to give example and set deadlines for dismantling any nuclear weapons in the world.
To the contrary, they even tolerate if not support proliferation to other countries such as israel, India etc.

As a logical conclusion for the future, countries that are harassed by bullies will have to sooner or later look for reliable defenses and in the absence of unified political standards and continueous presence of the WMD in bullie's possession, those countries will have to use the same detterent.

Nuclear weapons may provide cheap and formidable detterent(defenses) against potential aggressors. For instance one doesn't have to possess an aircraft carrier with numerous airplanes on board, instead, couple or several misilles can create sufficient deterrent.
