US: Reduced Nuclear Warheads

The US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told delegates at NPT Conference in New York on Monday that the US has reduced its operational nuclear warheads to 5,113. In 1967, at the height of the Cold War, the number of US nuclear warheads was at 31,225. The current stockpile represents a 83 percent reduction since then.

I wonder why Iran doesn't simply agree to the same nuclear arms limits and inspections as Israel.

It's my understanding that this new claimed figure by the US is for active nuclear warheads, and that the newly disclosed fact sheet does not enumerate the “several thousand” nuclear weapons in storage awaiting dismantlement.

Thus, this is just the nebulous type of reporting President Ahmadinejad was referring to in his speech yesterday, when he stated the need for credible oversight and regulation over the US nuclear weapon stockpile.
