Iran to Build Canal Linking Caspian to Central Desert

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad will participate in a foundation-laying ceremony on Tuesday to build a canal linking the Caspian Sea in the north to the central arid provinces of Semnan, Yazd and Kerman, Fars News reported. The $10 billion project will direct 500 million cubic meters of seawater to those provinces that border the Kavir-e Namak or Great Salt Desert. IRGC’s Khatam al-Anbia construction company is in charge of the project.

This is one of those things one wonders, why it has not been done before.

Considering the Caspian being almost 2000 meters below sea level !!

I like the idea.

This is an absolute environmental catastrophe waiting to happen.
Look no further than what happened to the Aral Sea under the Soviet Union.

not correct anon 9:07 AM

Irans caspian is flooding due to its position and because of the USSR policies. What is being done is practical besides creating jobs, changes the biosystem of the Kavir area .. maybe for the better.

Yes I want the bio system of the dessert area to change but not at the expense of the Caspian sea.
What happens if all Caspian sea countries start taking huge amounts of water from it.
Jobs should never be above or at the cost of the environment.
Besides water taken from Persian gulf and Arabian sea is better option.
