Despite numerous sanctions and the Treasury Department devoting a resource whose sole purpose is to impede Iran's economic growth through country hopping and threatening international banks that they would lose their American connections, Iran has found ways of circumventing those efforts and even growing its customer base for its products. To date the US has tied Iran's largest shipping firm, the complete insurance industry, all Iranian banks including the Central Bank, the gasoline, oil and petrochemical industry, and lately Iranian carpets, saffron and pistachio to the nuclear file. It will be interesting to see what new industry from Iran will be sanctioned because it is supporting the nuclear industry. Keeping in mind that the decision makers in Washington will be looking for industries that have direct involvement to the nuclear industry and avoid impacting the general Iranian population and only the Iranian government.
Good news indeed, if only it could be independently verified. Unfortunately IRI has this habit of over exaggerating modest achievements. Let's hope, for a change, this time round it proves us wrong.
It is good news, you're right. Fortunately, exports are something that cannot be faked. They have customs and shipping documents that are readily available to organizations like the WTO and IMF. Also, although it is often claimed, economic numbers cannot be changed so easily. The inflation numbers that have been debated often are mostly in agreement with the IMF and WTO numbers. Also it was interesting to note in the Presidential debates between Ahmadinejad and Karrobi this came up. Although they both claimed different inflation numbers, they were both right. One was using the change from one month to month and the other was claiming the numbers from one whole year to another. This is an easier way of claiming different numbers but they are both right, just how you look at it is different and politicians will chose their own way of looking at things to support their point. If you are in opposition and want to claim the current government is incompetent you will chose the negative view and if you want to support your work than you will say look here we are seeing real improvement.
Great achievement and also shows serious trade and economic diversification. Iran's real PPP- GDP is much higher than what its pathetic "western" enemies normally propagate. Most indepenedent economists rank Iran's GDP at par or slightly higher than Turkey's, despite 33 years of "sanctions' and all types of US imposed impediments.
By any objective measure, Iran should be part of the so-called G-20. By any standard this is great achievement despite the Zionist Stuart Levey and the "sanctions" mantra.
To the rest of the world (the non-Zionist/ US/ EU axis) the US's actions are looking more and more like those of a desperado's.
Iran-Turkey relations are going to be the ones to watch; Turkey is sitting on the most active fault line as the techtonic plates shift in this swift transition from unipolar to multipolar world.
Turkey has stated that it wants to triple its trade with Iran, if I remember correctly.
Keeping in mind that the decision makers in Washington will be looking for industries that have direct involvement to the nuclear industry and avoid impacting the general Iranian population and only the Iranian government. Whose mouth piece are you quoting from? Take out all the subsidies, shake downs and blackmail from Israel's GDP and you will see it is far lower then Iran's. The direction Iran is going under Ahmedinjado El Magnifico is to move from the bazaar into hi-tech which will boost the GDP even further
Anom 5:08, i was being ironic as the list of industries mentioned is broad. The point is that the real goal is to impede iran's progression in any way possible. The nuclear dispute is only the cover for pressure on iran.
Mr.Taheri, keep up the good patriotic work in presenting a true picture, and I could not agree with you more. The whole sordid "nuclear issue" is sheer nonsense, the real reason for US hostility towards Iran or any independent nation is delusional quest for hegemony. In the Middle-East the US/AIPAC/Zionist axis is weakening and they see Iran as a rising power and an impediment to their goals, so this sanctions effort led by Stuart Levey is just an excuse to harm and impede Iranian progress. Even if Iran totally disamred itself, these insidious Zionist warmongers will find some other excuse to penalize Iran. I believe Iranians should keep their nerve, unity and keep on building a strong defensive capability including a nuclear deterrent. US is in a mess and will not be able to wage a final suicide war against Iran with unlimited global consequences.
Thank you Anon 2:54, yes the West under the leadership of the US has been placing sanctions on Iran since the first days after the revolution even though Khomani actually stopped the Shahs nuclear program as a wasteful thing. If these many sanctions were really to stop nuclear proliferation than why don't we see them in places like India or Pakistan. Better yet, the question is silly when most agree that Israel received its nuclear weapons from the West.
