30th anniversary of 'Operation Eagle Claw'

An interesting Al Jazeera report on the 30th anniversary of the failed American 'Operation Eagle Claw', the attempted rescue of American hostages held in the US embassy in Tehran on April 25th 1980.

Photos of yesterday's memorial in Tehran, including the captured USN RH-53D, thoroughly cannibalized (presumably for use on IRIN helicopters). Note the anti-Obama, anti-USA banners and symbols.

In total 8 USMC RH-53D Sea Stallions took part in the disasterous Tabas raid and misnomer operation "Eagle Claw". The one that was displayed at Azadi Square (Maydan-e-Azadi) this week was one of the most damaged helicopter and was beyond repair This helicopter USMC serial # 158761 had complete operational plans and names of CIA operatives in Tehran along with the whole detailed extraction plan from the footbal stadium and Manzariyeh Airfield. This was an intelligence bonanza for the new Islamic regime. A lot of small arms, flak vests, UHF field radios and assorted equipment was captured by then them newly created Sepah Pasdaran operating as non-centralized Komitehs.

The other 5 hastily abandoned RH-53D were pretty much intact and were later completely overhauled and given to IRIN where they are still flying and some are now armed with Noor and FAJR ASM. These 5 IRIN choppers are serial # 158686, 158744, 158750, 158753 and 158758.
