First for Iran
Bushehr, Iran’s first nuclear power plant started its operation on Sunday and has begun to provide electricity to the national grid. The $1 billion, 1,000-megawatt plant will be formally inaugurated on 12 September. The plant will reach 40-percent capacity by then.
The Bushehr startup comes after many years of delay. Its construction began by Germany’s Siemens during the Shah’s government but was stopped after the Islamic revolution of 1979. The project restarted in early 1990s by Russian engineers, but faced many delays. Russia will supply the enriched uranium for Bushehr and repatriate spent fuel.
