Fast and Furious through the streets of Tehran - Video

Quick-paced drive through the streets of Tehran. Note the number of tower cranes and construction projects seen in the distance or passed by. In spite of the "tightest sanctions ever imposed" Tehran does not look anything like the state Baghdad experienced around 1999.

Shah of Iran 1974 interview

An interesting interview from the Shah of Iran circa 1974 in which he talks about Iran's relations with the United Kingdom.

For a six and a half minute interview segment in retrospect this clip is fascinating as a lot of topics discussed are still very relevant today.

For example;

- The reliance of the western powers on Middle Eastern oil in light of the 1973 oil embargo.

- The fact that (in hindsight nearly amusing) the western economies would eventually 'blow up' as people didn't work enough and try to get too much money for the little work done (which sounds a lot like the pretext for the current worldwide economic crisis).

- The inflated prices the west sell their arms for to oil producing monarchies in the region.

From Britain Iran brought primarily Chieftain tanks and warships in the mid to late 1970's

But for me the most interesting part was the Shah's conclusion that there was no great demand in his country for democracy, when the Iranian Revolution started in late 1978 it was clear the Iranian people at the very least wanted serious reforms as they had reason to fear for their safety at the hands of the dreaded SAVAK if they spoke out against or openly criticized the monarchy.

Also the Shah was clearly alienated from the majority of the uneducated masses living outside of the larger cities as evident by the manner in which he organized the 2,500 year celebration of the Persian Empire in Persepolis where royalty from around the world were invited to enjoy a lavish celebration and spectacle that was planned, organized and carried out predominately by western contractors rather than the indigenous Persians themselves.

Sky of Velayat 2 (video)

State TV video of Iran's Air drill provided by Reuters (no sound).

"The Defense Ministry's new anti-aircraft defense system will be tested in the Aseman-e-Velayat 2 maneuver," Defense Minister Ahmad Vahidi is reported to have said to PressTV on Sunday.

"Rest assured that in case of any aggression, the Zionists' F-15 and F-16 warplanes will be targeted and destroyed by our air defense", Commander of IRGC Aerospace Brig. Gen. Amir Ali Hajizadeh told Fars news agency.

"And if one of their aircraft manages to escape Iran's air defense- before it can land - the bases from where these aircraft took off will be struck by our destructive surface-to-surface ballistic missiles," added the IRGC General.

"The Zionists may initiate such a war, but undoubtedly its end will depend on our will," Hajizadeh noted.

Another Look at the Sejil Launch (video)

The Sejil could be a development of the Ashoura. (Perhaps the Iranians are naming each developmental increment by a new name?) Photos and video of the Ashoura were not included for its launch on November 2007. Jeffrey Lewis at Arms Control Wonk cites sketches of the Ashoura available at MDA that appear roughly similar to the Sejil. Comparisons are also being made to the Pakistani Shaheen II missile.

According to Paul in the comments section at ACW: This missile is completely different from the Shahab variety and represents a significant advance on the part of Iran. A two stage solid fuel missile; distinctly different long and white smoke trail; much faster initial acceleration than Shahab-3; and what appears to be a gimbaled vernier engine for the second stage (same basic design for the Safir satellite launch vehicle). Range is probably more than 2,000 km, or perhaps the warhead weight is heavier than Shahab-3, bringing the range down to “only” 2,000 km.
