Zafar Missile Test A Hoax--Iran

A Clear Case Of تكرار
By: Jabbar Fazeli, MD

Yesterday, the Iranian Pasdaran (IRGC) proudly announced yet another test of an indigenously produced anti-ship cruise missile. It is reported to be the fastest and latest such missile. The IRGC released a video of that test which was posted on this blog yesterday.

Video link for the Feb 24, 2013 test:

There is only one little problem with this latest missile test: the same clip was posted on YouTube on Jan 26, 2013:

And again on Feb 21, 2012:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z7qWUaXkA7c

And yet again on Feb 4, 2012 clip:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=uo7HSldU0u4

Based on the above, it appears that the IRGC kept reusing the clip of the first test every time they announced a new test of the Zafar missile. Considering that all the Zafar missile test clips look the same, the IRGC actually has no proof that it ever conducted a test since the unveiling of the Zafar missile 12 months ago.

Is the original Zafar missile test clip a hoax too?

Aside from the apparent fabricating of the news of the follow up missile tests, I was also puzzled by the part of the video clip that shows the point of impact.

If you watch the clip carefully you can see that the "missile" appears to be traveling underwater in the terminal phase, and not at sea skimming altitude as the missile specifications call for (1,2).

The impact with the decoy also appears to happen under the surface, and not above sea level. I would invite experts on this weaponry to comment on the plausibility that the impact with the target actually represents a torpedo impact, and not an AshM impact. In other words, whether or not the missile test being shown is actually showing a missile being fired and instead of a missile hit, we see a Torpedo impact.

In the meantime, I included a clip below that shows an older generation Iranian AshM test in which the impact with the target clearly occurs above sea level and not underwater.

August 9, 2011

According to reliable Iranian government sources, the next generation cruise missile will be supersonic and intercontinental anti-everything named "خيال". This part was a joke, but the total loss of credibility of Iran is no joke!

The "Cyber Basij"--Iran

By: Jabbar Fazeli, MD

Before the proponents of the regime accuse me of "name calling" I would like to say that the phrase "Cyber Basij" is a paraphrase derived straight from the Iranian government officials' statements such as the one made by Gen. Fazli (no relation) in 2011.

Brig General Ali Fazli, deputy commander of Iran’s Basij Forces, said in an interview on March 13, 2011 with "Mehr News" that Basij hackers were behind cyber attacks against “Enemies of the Islamic Revolution.” He added, “The approach of Basij is to fight soft wars…[and] organize a "cyber army" of tens of millions (4).

Iran's pseudo-government, the military of the Islamic Republic (the IRGC and the Basij), has set up a "Cyber Defense Command" that directs a complex propaganda operation coupled with media censorship and "cyber police" crackdown.

Below is the breakdown of the various elements of the regime's disinformation machinery:

- Jamming of foreign satellite news broadcasts during peak news events in Iran.
The BBC-Persian has been complaining about this for years and there has been a lot of discussion, even inside the Iranian government, about the health side effects of using jamming waves in populated areas (9,10).

- Using "media courts" to dissuade print media from publishing unflattering political, economic, and social news. I'm not including any links on this item as the examples of newspaper closures and journalist arrests are too numerous to cite.

- Internet censorship and blocking of social networks like Facebook and twitter, foreign based news outlets, as well as the blocking of websites critical of the regime (This blog site is proud to be one of the blocked sites in Iran since ~October of 2012).

It is note worthy that the IRGC is now the majority shareholder of Iran's telecommunication monopoly, and in effect has near total ability to monitor and control cell phones, SMS, and the Internet (13).

- Creating a "Cyber Police" unit, know as FATA (11), charged with arresting cyber activists who test the regime's unwritten slogan of "You are free to say and write whatever you like and we are free to arrest you".

There are reports that the IRGC has a dedicated wing, Ward 2-A, in the notorious Evin Prison in Tehran to house those arrested for subversive cyber activity (5). There is at least one documented unlawful death of a blogger in this cyber police prison ward (6); The IRI judiciary has not rushed to "hang" anyone for that particular crime.

-The IRGC "media war" operation extends to directing the propaganda message through cinema and State TV to "shape" public opinion (12).

Kill the messenger tactic:

The "Cyber Basij" has recently embarked on a Comprehensive efforts to discredit and silence exiled journalists. These efforts have included:

- Applying pressure on the families of exiled journalists to encourage self censorship.

- Publishing False media reports and character assassination of journalists. The BBC-Persian journalists were recently the subject of a fabricated report by the temple of truth, "Fars news", claiming that the BBC reporters engage in partner sex swaps (2). To give the report credibility these stories were then made subject of pro-government blog analysis (3). The blog analysis was actually quite sophisticated; In this instance the gist of the blog piece was that the Iranian media is failing to counter the "western propaganda" despite the BBC-Persian journalists' "sex scandals", so technically the blog was "critical" of the government media while spreading the regime lies about the BBC-Persian journalists.

- Creating mirror website of major news media such as www.persianbbc.ir (www.BBCpersian.ir was an earlier version which is now suspended), and http://www.radiodirooz.com, and creating fake blog sites and Facebook pages impersonating foreign based Iranian journalists targeted for character assassination (2). The "Cyber Basij" uses these site to post fake quotes and reports then uses the quotes in mainstream Iranian media. Most of these fake sites have since been suspended by the servers.
This is the Fake (Iranian) Cyber basij BBC site with today's regime friendly titles

The authentic BBC-Persian website with no regime friendly titles

Use of "Cyber Basij" commentators to spin the news and defend the Iranian regime:

It appears that the IR has deployed a wide array of commentators who make appearances on news and blog sites. They mirror the BBC-Persian service callers who use the "viewer participation" component of the BBC programs to make the argument for the regime and try to spin the news as best they can as "individuals" with a different view.

Judging by our own experience with the "Cyber Basij" commentators they can be divided into the following categories:

- The lowest tier commentators tend to repeat copy-pasted slogans and stick to a core message regardless of the subject matter. This category is characterized by the inability, or unwillingness, to follow the points in the conversation, and are experts at changing every subject into "Zionist" or "imperialist" something. The supposed country of origin and style can vary, but most of us have learned to spot these characters for who they are, low paid regime agents.

- The second tier commentators are those who actually do make a cohesive pro-regime point despite the characteristic spin and going off topic. Some would on occasion try to offer a critique of the regime while at the same time defending the regime's core message and attacking its critiques.
They sometimes use words like "mullahs" or nationalistic language to disguise their pro-regime message. On occasion they would adhere to a consistent anti-government line on a couple of unimportant issues to give themselves some credibility.

-The third tier commentators appear to be "mercenaries" who are notable for their better English and their "role playing" as they pretend to be western or impartial as they indirectly argue the regime's message, or try to discredit anti-regime bloggers and commentators without actually having any valid reasons. These commentators are skillful at rearranging "facts" in favor of the IR. They also tend to get angry and desperate when they are unable to get away with it, I assume it is because their compensation is linked to their performance.

One thing that all tiers of "Cyber Basij" commentators have in common is that their comments are rarely short or to the point, and they love turning the discussion into a tangent discussion about the west or the writers. The rule of the thumb is to not fall for the tangent off topic discussions and not take their personal attacks personally, after-all they're only doing their job.

We should not be dismissive of the fact that there are some out there who do have a legitimate pro-regime view of the world. Most such commentators don't tend to fight to the death defending the regime's core message or embark on coordinated personal attacks, or write lengthy slogan filled comments.

I can't help but have some respect for the true believers of the Islamic Republic, especially those using their real names and sticking their necks out defending an unpopular regime.

To the true "Cyber Basij" I say hats off and keep up the good work, Joseph Goebbels (1) has nothing on you!

Israel behind the Connecticut school shooting--Kayhan

By: Jabbar Fazeli, MD

Kayhan ran this on its front page yesterday: "The footprint of Israel in the mass murder of American students". The fine print reads "US senators and politicians reveal".

Kayhan is one of two newspapers in Iran whose editor is appointed directly by the supreme leader Khamenei.

The significance of this title is that it comes on the same day the Iranian "press court" found the reformist "Shargh" newspaper "guilty" of publishing "lies" and defying state directives by publishing information on "sudden" fluctuations in the exchange and gold market (1).

"Shargh" headline, "the return of 1,000,000 toman (gold) coin", was noting a hike in gold prices in Iran at a time when global gold prices were trending down. The paper was stating the "fact" that gold prices (sold in coins in Iran) had returned to record prices set in recent past when the Iranian currency was in free fall.

In a country were the regime claims piety, derived from its religious core beliefs, one would expect that blatant lies and misleading statements would have no place, but nothing could be further from the "truth" in today's Iran. This Kayhan headline is a reflection of a deep seeded and pervasive "culture of lies" and deceit which characterizes the entire Islamic republic apparatus.

The regime seems obtuse when it comes to the impact of this constant unapologetic lying on the image of the Iran and the Shiite Islam that it claims to represent.

Iran has become the "چوپان دروغگو" of the world which no one trusts anymore, event when on occasion it might be telling the truth.

Defenders of Velayat Skies-4 maneuvers--Propaganda in action

Fars news posted the story (below) in both English and Farsi. Please note the difference in title in the  two versions.

The Persian version of the story ignores the fact that the Hawk SAM is already a known entity and is an import (sometimes from Israel) and not a new "Able" system.
Fars news needs to start understanding that some pentalinguals maybe reading their posts in multiple languages.

Iranian VTOL drone, first in the world--NOT

Source: Ettelaat (photo caption: successful test of world's first VTOL drone in Iran)

As previously posted on this blog, Iran had announced that it had successfully tested a VTOL drone on November 3, 2012, which is nice, but what caught my attention was that the IR of Iran and some of its defenders here claimed that this drone was the "first in the world". Below is the actual report by Mehr news on the Iranian drone, along with some information on other "firsts" VTOL drones manufactured in the USA years prior.
This piece does NOT include information on all VTOL drones (I apologize to the military buffs), but I just wanted to prove that the statement that the Iranian drone was the "first in the world" is simply "false" which I'm sure many of you find shocking.

On Nov 4th, 2012 MEHR NEWS reported (unedited complete report):

Iran manufactures VTOL drone
TEHRAN, Nov. 4 (MNA) -- Iranian experts have succeeded to build a vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) drone which will be unveiled in the coming months.
The drone is being manufactured by researchers from the Mazandaran Science and Technology Park.
It is the first time that such a drone is being manufactured in the world. It will be unveiled during the festivities marking the 34th anniversary of the Islamic Revolution in mid-winter.
“This drone which enjoys ultra-modern technology and is being built for the first time in the world will be unveiled in Bahman (Jan. 20-Feb. 18), concurrent with the ten-day dawn celebrations,” Abbas Jam, the lead researcher, told the Mehr News Agency.
The drone does not require runways at all and can take off and land vertically.
“The drone is soundless and does not need runway for take-off,” Jam added.
The drone was to be tested on Saturday at the presence of the director of the Aerospace Industry Organization and senior officials from the Passive Defense Organization. (1)

Below is info on other VTOL drones not manufactured by Iran:

Bombardier CL-327 "Guardian"

Source: fas.org, aviastar.org
The CL-327 is an improved version of the CL-227 Sentinel VTOL UAV. The CL-327 is one of the most advanced vertical takeoff and landing (VTOL) surveillance system designed for intelligence gathering today. The system's turboshaft-powered unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) operates either from land or ship and can carry a wide variety of sensors for different mission requirements. The CL-327 is designed to satisfy numerous emerging market requirements for a dependable and versatile vertical take-off and landing (VTOL) UAV.
The Guardian offers 6.25 hours of endurance, a 105kg payload capacity, and a 200 km range. The system includes a Williams International heavy fuel engine, a digital data-link, compatibility with the CARS automatic recovery system, and the US sponsored Tactical Control Station.
The CL-327 entered production in October 1996, following the conclusion of a successful US Navy-sponsored heavy fuel propulsion program. The Guardian will be offered to worldwide customers seeking an affordable unmanned surveillance capability that can operate from all-sized navy ships and in rugged land environments which lack airstrips and infrastructure. RQ-8 & MQ-8   (USA)

In February 2000, the US Navy chose the RQ-8A Fire Scout as its vertical take-off and landing tactical unmanned air vehicle (VTUAV). Northrop Grumman-Ryan Aeronautical of San Diego was awarded an engineering and manufacturing development (EMD) contract for the Fire Scout, which would provide situational awareness and precision targeting support to the US Navy and Marine Corps. The Fire Scout programme is being managed by the US Navy's PMA-263 Unmanned Vehicles Program Office at Patuxent River, Maryland. In 2006, an RQ-8A landed autnmously (without a pilot controling the aircraft) aboard a moving US ship, the USS nashville (9).
In August 2005, Fire Scout was redesignated from RQ-8 to MQ-8 to reflect its multirole capability, including the ability to deploy weapons.(4)

January 26, 2006 Bell Helicopter’s TR918 Eagle Eye Unmanned Aircraft System (UAS) lifted off the ground for the first time yesterday, hovered for nine minutes, executed yaw and translation manoeuvres and then landed safely. It then undertook a second flight within 30 minutes of the maiden flight's landing. We have previously written about the TR918 here - the Eagle Eye uses the same tiltrotor system as a number of other Bell-Boeing VTOL designs, most notably the V-22 Osprey (Bell - Boeing)and the Quad TiltRotor.(8)

Three horizontally mounted propellers help a tilting turbojet push the craft up, and are then stowed away as the jet drops into flight position.
The model tested on June 24 is only 13 feet long with a 10-foot wingspan, but Aurora hopes the successful flight test will help it secure additional Pentagon funding for a full-scale version with roughly twice the dimensions.
The final version should be able to cruise along at 460 mph, near the speed of sound, and carry four Hellfire missiles.
By comparison, the Predator maxes out at 135 mph and carries two Hellfires. The Reaper does about 300 mph, but can carry up to 14 Hellfires, or a combination of Hellfires and laser-guided bombs.(5)

Cypher II by Sikorsky Aircraft Corporation, USA.
Source: Sciencedirect.com
Two Cypher II prototypes have been built for the US Marine Corps, which calls it the UAV “Dragon Warrior”. The Cypher II is similar in size to its predecessor, but has a pusher propeller in addition to its rotor and can be fitted with wings for long-range reconnaissance missions. In its winged configuration, the Cypher II has a range of over 185 kilometers (115 miles) and a top speed of 230 km/h (145 mph). It is unclear if the Cypher will enter into production.(6)

In conclusion, I just wanted to be the first to report that the Islamic republic of Iran, not knowing what to do with all the excess dollars, had also developed the world's first Jedi interceptor but it was unexpectedly destroyed by an American teenage Jedi. The tragic loss of the aircraft was captured in this clip:

Kayhan: "Crippling economic crisis in major European countries"

Pro-government Iranian newspaper Kayhan front-page headline today was dedicated to the economy but the editors appear to get the names wrong.

They seem to have casually substituted the word "Iran" with the words "major European countries".

I think the front page of this Iranian newspaper should have read "Crippling economic crisis in Iran" as it would have more true and more pertanant to Iranians today.
