The German newspaper Bild am Sonntag reports
that a man caught in January trying to enter Germany with a check worth about
$70 million was Tahmasb Mazaheri, former governor of the Central Bank of Iran
(AP, 2 February).
The customs officials at Dusseldorf airport
found the check in Mazaheri's luggage on 21 January upon his arrival from
Turkey. The check was for 300 million Venezuelan Bolivars issued by the Bank of
Venezuela.
Mazaheri was the governor of the Central Bank of Iran until 2008. The German police and customs officials are investigating possible money laundering.
