Rouhani attends Defense Industries Exhibition in Tehran

According to Fars News Agency:

Iran displayed its advanced home-made combat drone, Karrar, in camouflage color and armed with anti-aircraft missiles in an Exhibition in Tehran on Saturday.

Karrar was displayed during Iranian President Hassan Rouhani’s visit to the Defense Industries Exhibition today.

Karrar is capable of carrying a military payload of 500 kilograms to carry out bombing missions against ground targets. It is also capable of flying long distances at very high speed.

The drone has a flying range of 1,000 kilometers and a top speed of 900 kilometers per hour.

There seems to be something of a defense-related media blitz taking place from Iran following the recent U.S. inclusion of military subjects (ballistic missiles) into the ongoing nuclear talks. Possibly related to that response or offering another explanation: this may be an attempt by Iran's executive branch to demonstrate toughness on matters of defense, in an effort to subdue hawkish detractors of its outreach attempts toward the West.

Iran to Unveil VTOL Drone

Iran announced it has produced a vertical takeoff and landing drone. The VTOL drone will go under a final test today and unveiled during the 10-Day Dawn celebrations, marking the anniversary of the Islamic revolution, which begin on 31 January. (Mehr News Agency, 3 November)

Iran unveiled its first drone, Karrar, in August 2010, and last September unveiled Shahed 129, capable of 24-hour nonstop combat and reconnaissance missions.

Shahed 129: New Iranian Drone

In his news conference on Sunday, IRGC Commander Maj. Gen. Mohammad Ali “Aziz” Jafari told reporters that Iran has produced a new generation of unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV), named ‘Shahed 129’ capable of 24-hour non-stop flight.

“Shahed 129, which can carry out combat and reconnaissance missions with its 24-hour nonstop flight capability, is IRGC’s latest achievement in this field,” Gen. Jafari said.

IRGC commander added that Shahed 129 is armed with Sadid missiles that can hit “long-distance” targets. (ISNA, 17 September)

In August 2010, Iran unveiled domestically manufactured long-range Karrar Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV). Karrar is a 4-meter long Jet-powered drone reportedly capable of delivering a military payload on bombing missions against ground targets, with a 1,000 KM range and a maximum speed of approximately 1000 kph. The specifications of the new Shahed 129 and its differences with Karrar have not been made public.

Iran unveils the Karrar UCAV

Iran has unveiled its first domestically-manufactured long-range Unmanned Combat Air Vehicle (UCAV), in a ceremony marking Defense Industry Day in the country.

The unveiling of the home-made drone, named Karrar (Striker) took place in the presence of Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and a number of defense officials.

The 4-meter long plane is claimed capable of delivering a military payload on bombing missions against ground targets. Jet powered (Tolue-4 or Tolue-5?), it is claimed to have a 1000 km range and a maximum speed of approximately 1000 kph.
