Iran Navy ‘35th Fleet’ dispatched to Gulf of Aden

The 35th flotilla of the Iranian Navy has set off for high seas to safeguard naval routes for the country’s vessels operating in the region.

The flotilla, consisting of Bandar Abbas auxiliary ship and Alvand destroyer, left the country on Monday after the 34th fleet completed its mission and returned home.

The 34th flotilla, which comprises the Bushehr logistic vessel and Alborz destroyer, had left Iran's southern port city of Bandar Abbas for the Gulf of Aden and the Bab al-Mandab Strait on April 8.

COMMENTARY: The Iran Navy 35th Fleet consists of the following two vessels:

- IRINS Alvand (ex-Saam) (71) Alvand class (Vosper Mk5 type) frigate (FFG)

- IRINS Bandar Abbas (421) Bandar Abbas class light replenishment ship (AORLH)

The 35th Fleet-- like the 34th Fleet it replaces-- consist of naval vessels of the Alvand and Bandar Abbas class.

Iranian Warship Escorts Cargo Vessel to Yemen

Iran said its humanitarian aid ship, M/V Iran Shahed, has reached the Gulf of Aden en route to the Yemeni port of Hudaydah, the country’s largest, and is expected to reach its destination by Thursday 21 May. The Iranian navy also announced its warship IRINS Alborz (72), an Alvand (Vosper MK5)-class frigate, will escort the cargo ship to Hudaydah. The replenishment ship Bandar Abbas (421) is also accompanying Alborz. Iran is challenging the Saudi-led coalition power to inspect Yemen-bound ships to enforce UN arms embargo against the Huthis.

Iran Deploys Warships off Yemen’s Coast

The Iranian Navy said it has deployed warships to the Gulf of Aden on Wednesday on a mission to protect shipping from piracy. The move puts Iranian warships off the Yemeni coast during the escalation of conflict in the country. The Huthis insurgents have taking control of Yemen’s major cities by force, prompting Saudi-led coalition airstrikes and fears of expansion of the conflict.

Iran is the main supporter of the Huthis. Today, Secretary of State John Kerry said during a PBS interview that Iran supplies arms to the Huthis, including through regular flights to Yemen. (PBS NewsHour, 8 April)

Iran’s 34th Naval Group deployed to the Gulf of Aden comprises of two ships: IRINS Alborz (72), Alvand (Vosper MK5)- class frigate, and Bandar Abbas (421), a Bandar Abbas-class auxiliary oiler replenishment (AOR) vessel.

Iran Navy ’32nd Fleet’ sent to Gulf of Aden

According to PressTV:

The 32nd fleet of the Iranian Navy has left the country's southern port of Bandar Abbas for the Gulf of Aden to provide security for shipping lines in the region.

The fleet of warships, which includes the Jamaran destroyer and Bushehr logistic vessel, left Bandar Abbas on Tuesday.

The flotilla will sail through the strategic Strait of Hormuz, Bandar Jask, the Sea of Oman, Makran region, north of the Indian Ocean, Gulf of Aden and the strait of Bab al-Mandab.

It has been dispatched to the Gulf of Aden to protect the Islamic Republic’s interests in remote waters.

That would be IRINS Jamaran guided missile frigate and IRINS Bushehr replenishment ship, see file media below:

Iran Navy 25th and 26th Fleet patrols through Bab el-Mandeb Strait

The Iranian Navy’s 26th Fleet of Warships has conducted several successful anti-piracy patrols in Bab el-Mandeb Strait, Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced on Wednesday, adding that the country's flotillas will continue patrolling the waters.

The Iranian Navy has dispatched several fleets of warships to the Gulf of Aden and North of the Indian Ocean to protect the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against pirates.

The Navy dispatched its 25th flotilla of warships to the Gulf of Aden in early April to protect the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against pirates in the Gulf of Aden, Bab el-Mandeb and the Red Sea.

The 25th fleet intercepted 540 military and non-military vessels passing through the Gulf of Aden during its mission. It comprised of Alborz missile warship and Larak logistic ship.

IRIN previously announced its intention to deploy IRINS Bayandar (81) Bayandor class (PF 103 type) corvette as part of its 27th and 28th Fleet to the Atlantic, Pacific or South Indian ocean.

Iran Navy dispatches '13th Fleet' to Gulf of Aden

The Iranian Navy dispatched its 13th flotilla of warships to the Gulf of Aden to defend the country's cargo ships and oil tankers against the continued threat of attack by Somali pirates.

"The Thirteen fleet of warships, comprised of Tonb [IRINS Tonb (LSLH 513) Hengam class landing ship logistic] and Delvar [IRINS Delvar (AEL 471) Delvar class support ship] vessels is tasked with boosting security for Iranian merchant containers and oil tankers in the Gulf of Aden and north of the Indian Ocean for a period of 60 days," Commander of Iran's First Naval Zone Fariborz Qaderpanah said on Thursday.

"Over the course of the last two years, the Iranian fleet of warships has successfully managed to display its powerful presence in turmoil-stricken Gulf of Aden, and foil any attempt to impair transportation routes along the country's sea border," Qaderpanah added.

The Iranian Navy has been conducting anti-piracy patrols in the Gulf of Aden since November 2008, when Somali raiders hijacked the Iranian-chartered cargo ship, MV Delight, off the coast of Yemen.

The 12th flotilla of warships dispatched by Iran to the Gulf of Aden on an anti-piracy mission arrived in the Saudi port city of Jeddah today, Iranian Navy Commander Rear Admiral Habibollah Sayyari announced on Sunday.

Addressing the Navy personnel on the occasion of the anniversary of the victory of the Islamic Revolution, Sayyari said the flotilla, which has been sent to the Gulf of Aden to protect Iranian cargo ships against Somali raiders, docked in the Saudi port in order to renew Iran's message of peace and friendship to the regional states. 

"In pursuit of a powerful (military) presence in the high seas and to consolidate our friendly ties and declare our message of peace and friendship to the regional countries, the flotilla of warships of the Islamic Republic of Iran's Navy has entered Saudi Arabia's port city of Jeddah," he said. 



According to Sayyari, the Iranian flotilla includes Khark cruiser [IRIS Kharg. Kharg class replenishment ship, hull no. 431] and Alvand destroyer [IRIS Alvand, Alvand class frigate, hull no. 71].

Pirates attack Iranian ship

A 158,000-ton Iranian Sousangerd ship carrying crude oil to Spain has escaped an attack by ten Somali pirates who attempted to hijack the ship in the Bab al-Mandeb strait in the Gulf of Aden according to a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) official [Press TV 11/07/2010].

This was the fourth attempt by Somali pirates to hijack an Iranian ship in the region this year, the previous three of which were also unsuccessful.

RDML Qolam Reza Khadem Biqam, the acting commander of Iranian Navy, told reporters in Tehran today that Iran has deployed two new warships to the Gulf of Aden to protect and escort Iranian oil tankers and merchant ships against the pirates. Iran had previously sent two other warships to the area. Those warships will now be replaced by the new ships. The Navy commanders did not disclose class of warships deployed to the Gulf of Aden.
