Powerful Earthquake Hits Northwest Iran - UPDATE


A powerful earthquake struck northwest Iran on Saturday, killing at least 87 people and injuring more than 700. 

The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at 6.3 magnitude. It struck 48 km (29 miles) northeast of the city of Tabriz at a depth of 9.8 km (6.1 miles). The quake struck at 16:53 local time. Nearest major town to the epicenter was Ahar, with a distance of 32 km (19 miles).


UPDATE: The numbers of causalities have risen to at least 250 dead and more than 2,000 injured. The officials feared the numbers would rise.
