The Iranian navy held a
minelaying exercise at the Caspian Sea on Monday. Iran’s Supreme Leader
Ayatollah Ali Khamenei observed the exercise off the coast of Noushahr, a
Caspian port city in Mazandaran province. The exercise coincides with U.S.-led
International Mines Countermeasure Exercise (IMCMEX) in the Persian Gulf that
began on Sunday 16 September and runs through 27 September.
The focus of IMCMEX,
involving 20 nations, is to keep the Strait of Hormuz clear of any minelaying
activities if a military conflict breaks out. The Iranian exercise at
Noushahr focused on laying mines in case of war.
