Repeated Israeli threats against Iran have increased speculations that Israel is planning a pre-emptive strike against Iranian nuclear facilities. Oil prices soared back today above $134/bbl on Israeli threats to Iran.
The White House today sidestepped questions about the Israeli threats to attack Iranian nuclear sites if it continues uranium enrichment, saying it would not respond to "hypotheticals."
Israel’s Transport Minister Shaul Mofaz, a deputy and confidant of Prime Minister Olmert, had said an Israeli attack on Iranian nuclear sites looks "unavoidable."
“Attacking Iran, in order to stop its nuclear plans, will be unavoidable,” Mofaz said. He called UN economic sanctions against Iran “ineffective.” [Thompson Financial, 6 June].
On 3 June, during a visit to Washington, Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert had said that Iran's nuclear program must be stopped by “all possible means” and Tehran must be made to see it would suffer “devastating repercussions” if it pursued atomic weapons.
