Iran’s Future President: The Leading Candidates

Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the incumbent. His defeat would be the rejection of the Islamic Republic's policies and behavior in the past four years.

Mir-Hussein Mousavi, a former Prime Minister known as a pragmatic politician. His government participated in the Algiers talks that led to the release of US hostages in 1981. Also known to have negotiated an end to terrorist operations in France in 1980s in exchange for a reduction of French support for Saddam during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war.

Ayatollah Mehdi Karrubi, a former speaker of Majlis. Karrubi is running as an outsider and the leader of the loyal opposition. He has put forward a liberal platform that includes equal distribution among all Iranian citizens the shares of the country’s oil and gas industry.
