Also known to have negotiated an end to terrorist operations in France in 1980s in exchange for a reduction of French support for Saddam during the eight-year Iran-Iraq war.
Ayatollah Mehdi Karrubi, a former speaker of Majlis. Karrubi is running as an outsider and the leader of the loyal opposition.
