Iran to Import Chicken to Ease Public Concern

Iran’s Association of Meat Importers announced today that it has received directions from the government to import 10,000 tons of chicken and 30,000 tons of red meat by the end of the holy month of Ramadan (ending in the third week of August). The announcement was made to ease concerns over the astronomical rise in the price of chicken and red meat in the past few weeks. The price of chicken at 80,000 rials per kilogram has become a major problem for the government, with newspapers, cartoonists as well as ordinary people questioning and ridiculing government’s ability, or lack of, to manage day-to-day affairs of the country, especially after the recent severe sanctions went into effect.

  2. 80,000 rials/KG = $3 per KG at the official exchange rate or $1.80 per KG at the black market rate.

Once again backwards Iranians complain about things that are worse outside of Iran.

Wait til they learn that Americans have to pay over 50% of their income to the government in taxes, property taxes, sales taxes, fees . . . .

Basically an ignorant and backward people.

  4. Amazing!
Nothing seemed to move the public against the regime, then suddenly this.
We might be witnessing the world's first chicken revolution. So much for the loyalists "keep the Iranianx hungary" theory.

  5. Anon 11:00 AM,

You calculations are wrong! 8,000 rials in official exchange rate is $6.34 per kilo, not $3 as you have calculated (official rate if 1,260 rials per dollar). Your calculations for the market rate is also wrong! 8,000 rials is $4.20/kilo and not $1.80. You were probably using another country's exchange rate to build your argument.

  6. The Anon 11:00 AM might have meant price per pound not kilogram.

If he meant price per pound, then those "backward" people will tell him they are not getting salaries in US dollars, but in rial. In rial, the price of chicken in the past few weeks have skyrocketed. Go and tell people who need to buy the commodity, that the price is similar to those in the U.S.
