Iranians Charged in Assassination Plot in US

The US authorities said they have broken up a plot by two men linked to the Iranian government to assassinate the Saudi ambassador in Washington. One of the suspects, Mansour Arbabsiar, was arrested last month in New York, while the other, Gholam Shakuri, is in Iran.

The Saudi Arabian government said the plot to assassinate Ambassador Adel al-Jubeir was “a despicable violation of international norms, standards and conventions” [Reuters, 11 October].

US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton also called the plot a “blatant violation” of international norms [Reuters, 11 October].

Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Ramin Mehmanparast rejected US accusations.

“These threadbare attitudes, which are based on the age-old and hostile American-Zionist policies, are a ridiculous show in line with certain scenario fabrication of divisive ends on the part of the enemies of Islam and the region,” Mehmanparast said [Press TV, 11 October].

US Attorney General Eric Holder pointed to IRGC and its Quds force. The Justice Department chief said one of the suspects named in the indictment, Gholam Shakuri, is a member of the Quds Force.

“High-up officials in those agencies, which is an integral part of the Iranian government, were responsible for this plot," Holder said. "I think one has to be concerned about the chilling nature of what the Iranian government attempted to do here," he added.

According to the indictment, Arbabsiar said after his arrest in New York that he had been recruited and directed by men he understood were senior Quds Force officials. Arbabsiar, a 56-year old Iranian-American, apparently approached an individual in Mexico for help and paid him $100,000 as a down payment on the $1.5 million requested to execute the plot, but that individual turned out to be an informant for the US Drug Enforcement Administration [Reuters, 11 October].

The indictment also alleges that Shakuri approved the plan to kill the ambassador during telephone conversations with Arbabsiar.

The men are charged with conspiracy to murder a foreign official.

UPDATE: A senior IRGC commander, Brigadier General Hossein Salami, called US allegation of IRGC’s involvement in a plot to assassinate the Saudi ambassador to Washington as “hilarious and baseless” [IRNA, 12 October].

  1. Most of this reeks of daily US/Zionist farce, fabrications and desperate propaganda against Iran, and usually does not merit any serious comment, however this pathetic attempt to malign Iran takes the cake and is beyond absurd.

Why would Iranian "factions" and "Mexican cartels" plot against an obscure Saudi whose puppet nation is already boiling over? Secondly, the Mexican looking 65 year old "Iranian" was entrapped in May in Mexico City and this hillarious "news" came out today (not too many middle-aged men are into this sort of plotting nor have the energy or motivation, despite Viagra).

This fantasy "news" was timed to deflect public opnion as US socio-economic mess gets worse and the Zionist banksters are coming under public anger daily and US LOST WARS in Af-Pak and Iraq consume billions as over 50% of US population is now on some form of welfare as deadbeat economy heads for total meltdown. It is also a bit rich coming from a murderous US government which murders its own citizens by drones on an almost daily basis and has broken every covenent of international and domestic law.

This pathetic propaganda and sheer lies should be taken with a bucket of salt and then some even on an obscure blog which only posts sheer nonsense about Iran. Propaganda is one thing, utter malicious gossip worthy of Debka is totally another comedy.

This sort of clowning is worthy of a Saturday Nite Live skit. Wonder what "Iranians and Mexican drug cartels are plotting of next"? Hollywood and Zionist media should be proud of such creative delusions!

Encouragingly, even a cursory tracking of comments in the US and western media shows that even the average brainwashed FOX news buff, fed a steady diet of Iranophobia is not buying this hogwash by the tanker load.

  3. What convenient timing, given this:

Congressional Investigators to Subpoena Holder in Fast and Furious Probe

Eric Holder is on the verge of losing his job over the Fast and Furious gun scandal, and a day later, they foil an Iranian terror plot.

They really think the US public is that stupid.

  4. I'm skeptical. The details as outlined are highly curious.

The intention appears too much like a Zimmermann Telegram like effect. If so, I would suspect MEK but that's only a guess.

Iran quickly put out a typically worded denial, but I expect them to do investigative work of their own, and provide details of their findings.

  7. The Iranian officials and the state media have been condemning the US for its allegation, calling it politically-motivated and warmongering on part of the US, but curiously the IRGC and other officials have not yet made a statement categorically denying Shakuri’s involvement in the alleged plot, even though the indictment names Shakuri and his alleged affiliation to IRGC-Quds Force. I believe the “analysis” of why the indictment was made could wait a bit and everyone should get to the bottom of this alleged plot. Saying the indictment was politically motivated does not resolve the issue.

  8. ---Slowly engineering casus belli... pretext.---

it don't take much engineering when it's true.

Ahmad Vahedi, Iran's current minister of defense, said the charges are crazy. "Iran doesn't go around blowing up Saudi ministers like they're Argentinian Jews."

asked to comment about whether he believes that any member of the Quds Force would engage in assassination, Mesha’al Tammo said nothing.

Also, if you read the complaint, the evidence on him is scant and seems like entrapment. Although there is supposedly one recording which is damning so we'll have to wait and see what comes out.

  13. So Iran subcontracted $1.5 million dollar hit to an FBI infested drug cartel in the US only to take out a nobody ambassador???

As if there's a shortage of Saudi and Israeli targets in the Middle East...lol

And somehow we're supposed to believe this from "US department of truth"??? Yeah, right..I believe them. Why not?? After all Saddam had WMD and they're still looking for it, right???

My word!! Talk about desperation!!! The US propaganda machine has surpassed that of North Korea twenty years ahead and make the North Koreans look like amateurs.

Why would Iran go through all this trouble just to hit a low level target when they easily take out the king himself in Saudi Arabia if they want to???

The US must really believe the world is that stupid to believe them.

  15. Israel's days are fewer now. The weapons and proxy forces, emergent social/political activism, drift of US alignment with zionist element... all encourage far right nationalist element in Israel to "dig in prepare", what is to follow may set in place forever the quality of life and condition of clear minded, global citizens of Israels population who strive to coexist... the organization that governs them espouses not only an us vs them mindset re "Palestine issue", but the slow and steady elimination of the indigenous people. The Nationalist element will respond saying "we have no choice, they attack us, you see that"
I would note that native American Indians attacked US cavalry troops as well... Palestinians (like Native American Indians had experienced) are on their own "Trail of Tears"... and will no go easily into hat good night.

To their credit, Stuxnet was a clean and creative operation... however this recent Saudi ambassador operation was amateurish. They will stop at nothing, knowing that the grains of sand in the glass are now few.

Interested parties should be on heightened alert next 12 months.

  17. If Saudi Arabia is on bad terms with Iran why should Iran allow to send pilgrims to Mecca so that Saudis will make millions of Dollars from Iranians?
Iran should stop sending pilgrims to that country honestly.
And another thing stop investing in UAE another anti Iranian entity.
These Persian gulf Arabs hate Iran they think they are better than us and treat Iranians with contempt yet they are basically dessert nomads.

  21. Gentlemen, let get serious. Even the Saudis are not buying this poorly staged US farce. This Jubeir fellow is a lightweight Saudi and is only the "ambassador" due to fact that he is married to the daughter of Abdullah's numerous sons. He used to be an errand boy for Bandar (the ex-ambassador) who was packed off to Riyadh after he became too big for his boots. He and Turki (the "intelligence" chief) were both canned.

The whole sordid episode is nothing but a failed and desperate attempt to embarass Iran as US domestic woes multiply. The Iranian "agent" is just an actor on US intelligence payroll. These hapless types of pretend "terrorists" are kept on US payroll from various exiled communities for these kinds of purposes. These patsies play the expendible role for false flags when needed. Why would a 56 year old middle aged man with no political ties want to engage in such Hollywood plots originating from Mexico no less? This is beyond FUNNY. There is no shred of any proof.

In reality, there is zero chance of any conflict out of this desperate episode as the US is too weak, bogged down and the consequences of any conflict just too horrendous for the region and the world even beyond the realm of the craziest armchair warmongers. The US has ZERO leverage over Iran and its military is in tatters after a decade of lost wars from Afghanistan to Libya.

Iran is not Somalia or Iraq, and the bankrupt US simply does not have the strategic mass to wage an endless and suicidal war against Iran. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN AND THIS CRAZY FABRICATION WILL BLOW OVER. Even the BBC is questioning the veracity of this totally whacked out story. The best the US could do was to sanction Mahan Airline. LOL.

That same American military that you claim is in tatters will be able to destroy all the main Iranian infrastructure in 72 hours.

  23. >>Gentlemen, let get serious.<<

    Fair enough...

"The enemy of my enemy is my friend" Saudi royals are under increasing pressure- aligned with Western extravagance and hedonism, Abdullah bin Abdul-Aziz Al Saud grudgingly gives money and certain social freedoms to keep the people seduced and content. Shia-Persian emergence anew is feared, Israel enters here as a "frenemy" against Iran - operations in all variety of concocted permutations are to be expected.

    >>These patsies play the expendible role for false flags when needed.<< (with) >>bankrupt US simply does not have the strategic mass to wage an endless and suicidal war against Iran. NOTHING WILL HAPPEN AND THIS CRAZY FABRICATION WILL BLOW OVER. <<

    - While this particular operation is quite small, the "diplomat" label denotes "international" alarm... i.e. international support against regime as this is sold as everyone's problem. Not to be misconstrued, the Iranian regime is a hostile force and holding the Iranian people hostage... however, sentiment such as that espoused by US Ambassador Bolton should be viewed with concern as the architects disagree with his immediate strike mentality. Evidently the neo-cons have a mutual admiration society as a decision support system. Again, more Stuxnet and less bunker buster.

In regards to this "blowing over"

    - You may be surprised to find how quickly and uniformly the US citizen will support the comprehensive use of retaliatory military power after being attacked. -A flag of the correct size and scope is not beyond consideration, exceeding all historical comparisons.... the Iranian regime would do well to allow the people to experience a free and open society. At this moment, however, it appears as though the regime will employ all the crude and rudimentary measures in an attempt to control the people

    - Neda, and those like here, are the regime's greatest fear, not Israel, or the U.S.
