Chairman of Assembly of Experts Calls for Unity

Mahdavi-Kani Concerned over Upcoming Parliamentary Elections

Chairman of Iran's Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad Reza Mahdavi-Kani said today politicians should avoid creating tension ahead of the country's Majlis elections next March.

Mahdavi-Kani became the second senior Iranian official in as many days to raise concern over the upcoming parliamentary elections. Yesterday, the Minister of Intelligence Hojantoleslam Moslehi warned the nation of the formation of an alliance between what he termed “seditionists” (supporters of the Green Movement) and “deviationists” (circles close to President Ahmadinejad) to oppose the established order and the supreme leader and his policies.

"We should never abandon our friendship and mutual respect over group or individual aspirations," Ayatollah Mahdavi-Kani said. “We still can achieve some kind of unity in our shared aims, and the next elections should be the start for that," he added [Press TV, 7 September].

Mahdavi-Kani emphasized the critical importance of different political groups and factions not to let the elections turn into a “challenge to national security.”

"Every time there has been a political dispute in Iran, foreign powers have put more pressure on the country. They always take advantage of our internal disputes, but the moment they find out we are still united, they leave the scene," he explained.

More than 4000 candidates will be running for 290 seats in Majlis. But the eligibility of the candidates and their unwavering belief in upholding the established order must be proven before the Guardian Council, itself a key institution of the current establishment, can approve their candidacy.

  1. The last paragraph in Mahdavi-Kani speech is precisely why this Theocracy must go.

  2. Hi,

This regime seems to label anyone with these silly labels.

I have never understood the origins of mazhabiouns. Were they an offshoot of Fedayeen Khalg or similar terrorists groups?

I guess Shah’s era excesses added to the fuel for this theocracy to grow. Then we had all this crap about Ali Shariati and others who mixed Socialism with Islam and created this monster theocracy based on some bollox. The followers and even current followers seem to be (if any) from lower classes and Bazari families who are masters of deceptions (Kolah-bardari).

I think this nation is culturally 30 years behind. There is always the tendency to have a shah, Imam, rahbar or another figurehead and everyone follows him. However, in general nobody seems to like this regime, including the very lower classes that they have now realised that it is all a cabaret act. You could see that in discussions in many places and with different people when I was there recently. My feeling is that this regime will crumble from inside sooner rather than later. There is no need for another war etc or external pressure. The people have had enough!

  3. WHAT MAKES IRAN A ROCK IN FRONT OF THE ENEMIES IS ITS ADHERENCE TO ISLAMIC STATUTES ,IF IRAN ABANDONS ISLAM AND EMBRACE THE WESTERN VERSION OF DEMOCRACY[which themselves dont uphold]THEN IT IS GOING TO BE ANOTHER PAKISTAN!.

  4. Unity? More like asking for Obedience. That is what the establishment wants, Blind Obedience, no questions asked. They will always find a few hundreds candidates that are willing to be blind. The next elections are shaping to be of more scam and shame in IR history.

You are correct my friend. The Shah was not even one per cent of the evil and stupid theocracy but unfortunately he was responsible for the Akhoonds growth because of his religious conviction.
Reza Shah despised the Akhoonds and blamed them rightly for Iran's cultural backwardness. If only he was to see what has happened to Iran now at its lowest point since the Qajars.
In fact Iran has gone back to before 1906 constitution and the mentality of this theocratic regime to 1400 years ago very sad.

How little you know Iranian culture.
Iranian culture predates Islamic one and is very much alive today more so than your beloved Islamic one in our hearts.
Pakistan was part of India and broke up after civil war between Muslims and Hindi sects therefore Pakistan was born as an Islamic state.
Iran as a country was born before Islamic ideology about 1200 years before Islam and its culture 5600 years before Islam so to us Islam is not first or even second but possibly third in line and even that has eroded.

  7. as people yearn for more freedom and political reform and relaxation becomes urgent, the ruling clique splinters and those with the greatest amount of power demand that NOTHING changes.

rigidity when elasticity is required means more blood will be spilled.

Wise man u are right. Let the Iranians do this by themselves and not a war invasion from outside. By the way there was and will be no military " help" without to pay for it with oil in other words like lybia 35% for france... The agreement is already signed without any elections and parliament...
Mr. Uskowi can u give me an answere to this question or somebody else.,
Do iraqis now live better than before 2003? Or the afghans before 2001? And please don't say its diff. to say....After 10th years....

  11. as people yearn for more freedom and political reform

What more freedom, in the time of austerity u think people want freedom, they want jobs, security and most of all a decent standard of living. Political reform must be carried out in those liberal democracies first before they preach others. Just look at Greece or Spain or Ireland.

    "Want more freedom"?

We have no freedom Blink so we are out there to get it through force.

We don't care about the others.
We only care what goes on in our own country namely Iran so who cares about Greece or Spain etc.

We want total change in our country which means getting rid of the current establishment the theocracy after that Iran can be a normal country not a fascist theocracy run by old decrepit ignorant mullahs and their thugs.
