Iran Denies Military Presence in Syria, Seriously!

Iranian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Marziyeh Afkham today denied the presence of Iranian military personnel in Syria.

“Iran is just extending humanitarian aid to Syria,” Afkham was quoted as saying by Iran’s semiofficial Fars News Agency on Wednesday.

Echoing Afkham’s denial, Fars report also quoted a 2013 statement by the IRGC public relations director, Brig. Gen. Ramezan Sharif, that Iran “is only present in the country at the level of military attaches to transfer its defense experiences to the defenders of Syria.” (Fars News Agency, 10 June)

Iran is giving us new definitions of “humanitarian aid” and “military attaches.” In Syria, for example, the Iranian version of military attaches number in hundreds; deploy and lead the operations of thousands of Hezbollah and other foreign Shia militias; direct military operations centers in different parts of the country; operate heavy military equipment and UAVs; etc. They are probably doing it for humanitarian purposes, as Ms. Afkham would say.

  2. "Humanitarian aid" in the shape of barrel bombs. Since day one the very foundations of the Islamic regime was based on lying. They lie like one breaths air.

  4. IRGC and Iranian political figures are on past record stating Iran has military advisors in Syria. The distinction they make is that there are no Iranian military unit formations-- such as a brigade-- actively engaged in the conflict. In this, their position is somewhat similar to U.S. official pre-'65 position of the United States in Vietnam.

Fars isn't the most reliable source of news. It would also help to know the context of the Iranian spokesperson's comments. It's possible the spokesperson was characterizing the Iranian role, rather than qualifying it.

    1. There is a serious problem when the spokeswoman of the country's foreign ministry says Iran's aid to Syria is only humanitarian in nature, with IRGC spokesman saying there are only military attaches serving in that country. No justifications for either statements. Gen. Soleimani famously said not long ago that we should expect a big surprise in the coming days in Syria. That surprise is not humanitarian in nature!

  5. they are partly right although the regime has sent weapons and troops and hizbullahi irregulars, they have been so ineffective that it is as if it has only been humaniterian help.
