Quake Hits Southern Iran


A strong earthquake measuring 5.7-magnitude on the Richter scale today hit the town of Goharan in Iran's southern Hormozgan province. The tremor, hitting the area at 14:33 local time (6:03 EST), had a depth of 8 km. A strong aftershock measuring 5.5-magnitude jolted the area an hour later (15:27 local time).

The provincial crisis management director, Hossein Ranjbar, said that no injury or death was reported but a number of buildings were destroyed. (Mehr News Agency, 18 May)
