Mursi to renew Egypt-Iran ties

"We must restore normal relations with Iran based on shared interests, and expand areas of political coordination and economic cooperation because this will create a balance of pressure in the region."

-- Mohammed Mursi

According to Reuters Egypt's first democratically elected president has stated he is interested in restoring Iranian Egyptian ties.

Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has state he emphasizes with "expanding bilateral ties and strengthening the friendship between the two nations."

The Iranian leadership has hailed most of the Arab Spring revolutions, alluding to them as uprisings against western imposed despotism not unlike the one that was imposed upon Iran through the last Shah.

The geopolitical implications of Mursi's move have yet to make clear if the two countries will form anything more than simple diplomatic relationship rather than a strategy regional alliance based on common interests.

The Iranian regime -- which is currently backing the regime of Bashar al-Assad in Syria -- has few allies in the region and has recently lost the support of Hamas which itself is an offshoot of the Muslim Brotherhood party which has just won the election in Egypt.

  1. The Egyptian military calls the shots regarding foreign policy and Mursi knows this.
But of course what he could mean by this is that Iran gives millions of dollars to Egypt in return Iran receives insults from Arab countries.
Turkey hasn't spent a penny and yet it is much more popular than Iran ever could be.
Iran's support of Assad in Syria has angered Sunni Arabs throughout the region and they regard Iran's Shiite as heretics. But alas the mullahs are careless enough regarding Iran's money that they give it away to any country but neglect the construction of schools hospitals and the welfare of the Iranian nation.
To the mullahs Iran is only a base and a cash cow to milk (rape) and finance their twisted and unattainable nightmares.
That will be the theocracies legacy.

  2. Paul,

The quote carried by Reuters and referenced in your post was based on an interview given by Morsi to Fars News Agency. But a spokesman for Egyptian presidency said today in Cairo that Mr. Mosri has never spoken to Fars!

"Mr. Morsi did not give any interview to Fars and everything that this agency has published is without foundation," a spokesman for the Egyptian presidency told the official news agency MENA. (AFP).

Fars had said that Morsi spoke to one of its reporters in Cairo on Sunday just before his election triumph was announced. It provided an audio link to what it said was a recording of Morsi speaking Arabic in the interview.

Someone, Fars or the presidential spokesman, is not telling the truth. We need to follow the story’s development in the coming days.

  6. If Morsi wants to be a useful, he should ask Iran openly and publicly to recognize Israel; that would embarrass the regime

  7. Also of note that the presidential office in Egypt Announced today that the president is not giving any comments except thought the office of the president. This is according to Al-Jazira this morning.
The main issue today in Egypt was to whom will the president swear the outs of office, to the parliament or to the constitutional court.
