Iran may have downed US drone

Above: IRNA photo associated with Iranian claim

Iran has claimed to have downed a U.S. military RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone that violated Iran's eastern border with Afghanistan.

NATO has stated this drone may be the same one that it lost over western Afghanistan last week:

"The UAV to which the Iranians are referring may be a US unarmed reconnaissance aircraft that had been flying a mission over western Afghanistan late last week. The operators of the UAV lost control of the aircraft and had been working to determine its status." -- ISAF statement

The RQ-170 Sentinel stealth drone is the same kind that was used to find and monitor Osama Bin Laden when his compound at Abbotabad Pakistan was discovered earlier this year.

Iranian media reported last July that it shot down a US drone near the Fordu nuclear site in Qom.

  1. It's enormously unlikely that it's true and that it's an RQ-170 Sentinel.

    when the Iranian's post some evidence that they have an RQ-170, I'll believe that they're not again making up crap.

    there's no way that they could have shot it down without it becoming a scattered mess of shards and the Iranian haven't any other way of bringing it down.

    the claim that they assumed control of it mid-flight is even less likely than the claim that they have one.

  2. congratulation to people and state of Iran.

  3. That image is NOT the RQ-170...Nor is the image originally posted by Iranian news agencies. The image here is a British UAV prototype, part of the Taranis UCAV program.

  4. the implications of this shoot-down are huge. this is the apex of stealth tech, and the fact that Iran can both detect, and destroy this aircraft is very significant. No wonder Nato has come up, quickly, with this ridiculous cover story.

  5. Agree, Scotty.

    However, IRNA has also mistakenly used this image. See here. As we're already aware, Iranian defense reporting is may times unreliable.

    It will be interesting to see if the Iranians provide images of the aircraft in question. It would represent a propaganda boon, but at the same time would also provide evidence as to how the aircraft was either lost or downed.

  6. And in FarsNews and PressTV they are using an image of the AVE C (aka Petit Duc)claming it to be the RQ-170..

    Makes it's hard to take them very seriously when their "reporters" are too lazy to do a basic Google Image search.

  8. A month or so ago, the Iranian government announced that they were going to release 100 documents about US terrorism

    ~~~~"
    "We have a hundred unbeatable documents on the US role in directing terror and terrorists in Iran and the region," Ayatollah Khamenei said on Wednesday, addressing a large number of Iranian school and university students on the threshold of November the 4 which marks the takeover of the former US embassy in Tehran by Muslim students following the late Imam Khomeini's line in 1979.
    "By releasing these documents, we will dishonor the US and those who claim to be the advocates of human rights and campaign against terrorism among the world public opinion," he added.
    Ayatollah Khamenei reiterated that Tehran has a full hand with abundant proofs, evidence and documents to prove the terrorist nature of the US."~~~~
    well, we 're still waiting for those documents.......
    we're going to wait even longer for the liars to produce pictures of an RQ-170
    Khomenei and his men are not used to telling to truth ...or keeping their word.
  9. Again, I agree, Scotty. (BTW, I'm not the one who posted this here on Uskowi.
    As for Iranian defense reporting, the details they provide are usually unreliable. So an erroneous ID of the aircraft isn't in itself unusual.
    What is noteworthy is that Iranian media claims the country has obtained a U.S. military drone, and NATO subsequently admitting to the fact they have lost one.
    At this point, without corroborating video/photo evidence (which might be withheld for legitimate security reasons) or details, that's all we folks dependent on open source reporting have to go by.
    try thinking with your brain
    a us senator who is leading the current republican nomination to be president admitted on TV that he would escalate the current covert ops of supporting insurgent groups in Iran meaning pjak, mek and others who have basically admitted themselves to working with the US
  13. redz
    I don't suppose you are posting your nonsense from Iran are you?
    There are paid agents and family members of the regime which spread their nonsense on all Iranian sites so that they agitate the Iranian community into thinking the Iranian people support the bankrupt regime which is known not to be true.
  14. The latest high tech stealth UAV that reported it is in the military service by 2009 and announce official that is in service by American military in 2010.
    Now in Iranian hand in 2011.
    my comment: do not by Lockheed-marine tech, they are expensive and unreliable.
    by Grumman tech, we have it for about 33 years and we happy about the product.
    and how does that rebut that Khomenei and company are habitual liars?
    I do most of my thinking with my brain and used it to study logic, redz.
    do as much for yourself before giving advice to others.
