T-72 MBT in Iranian Service

Iran is believed to operate 480 T-72M1 and T-72S since 2002. (Not be confused with the T-72Z.)

  4. All T72 tanks either from India or Russia or Iran have a design flaw they are extremely cramped inside you would need to be below 5f 5in and worst of all the T72 is a death trap sometimes the ammo feed system jams that is lethal in times of combat. It is always advised the commander and radio operator stay well clear of the ammo feed system because it has been known to rip tank crews arms off!
The main gun is a smooth bore 125mm good for short and medium range targets but as targets increase in range the hit probability decreases drastically. To make up for the tanks defects the Soviets had mass attacks in mind in the European theatre of war this would have to work in conjunction with superior air cover in all different levels. So basically this tank was designed to do a particular job in mind in a rush regardless of crew comfort and safety therefor this tank is not a defensive tank in a classic sense like the Chieftain tank for example.
I will write more about this tank and more about other tank models in service with Iran in the future.

  5. Regarding the T72 automatic ammo feed system the T72 has a three man crew which is the Commander,Radio operator and Driver the auto feed system does away with fourth crew the loader this can be advantages in terms of giving the tank a lower and smaller silhouette to its enemy but it has disadvantages such as ammo feed and speed inflexibility as well as unreliability.
Please note in my opinion it is always advisable to have a four man crew for theatre of war maintenance and repair duties when the tank is in action far away from any tank recovery unit and needs to vacate a hot zone as soon as possible.
